The Community Council of Alamance County recognized senior Myra St. Clair, at left in photo along with Tammy Cobb, outreach coordinator, as a recipient of the 2004 Alamance County Award for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership at a noon luncheon Tuesday, April 6 at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington.
In addition, the Hayden-Harmon Foundation allocated $1,000 to each award winner to donate to the organization of their choice. This is the first time the foundation has offered such an award.
St. Clair, a native of Raleigh, is one of five award recipients. She is majoring in international studies with minors in Spanish and Latin American studies. She has been active with the Kernodle Center for Service Learning at Elon for four years and is the student coordinator for service learning.
She frequently gives her time to worthwhile causes, such as America Reads, Koppertop Learning Center, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army Boy’s and Girl’s Club.
St. Clair says service is an important part of her life.
“Service has taught me to reach beyond my inner self and discover the world around me,” St. Clair says. “Service is invaluable to my life because I am able to connect to people in my community and change not only their lives, but mine as well.”
