Hope’s Story

It was the dream of a little girl, Hope Stout, who passed away of a rare bone cancer January 4, 2004, at the age of 12, to have this huge celebration to honor the people who would raise $1 million to grant the wishes of 155 sick children.

It all started in early December 2003, when the wish-granting team of Lynne Allen and Kelli Breaux met with an amazing twelve year-old girl named Hope Stout. When they asked Hope to make a wish, she responded by asking, “How many children are waiting to have their wishes granted?” The wish team told her that 155 children were waiting. She immediately told them to make that her wish, explaining that she wanted to grant the wish of every child we had on our waiting list. She also wanted to do it by January 16th, 2004 at a Hollywood-style celebration. We needed $1,000,000 in thirty days, in order to grant Hope’s wish.

Toddlers gave up allowances. Kids held a walkathon. A family gave up its trip to Walt Disney World. Someone bought a trip to the NFL playoff game in St. Louis and “wished” it away.

There’s a saying, he who grieves well lives well. We’re due a little joy today. Pardon one last sports cliche, but Hope reminded us winning isn’t always what matters; it’s how you play the game.

The city of Charlotte, with our little star leading the way, played big.

And now Elon University is going to play its part. We are asking for a minimum $3 donation at the door to contribute to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses in the Carolinas.
