Elon’s Phoenix14News took second place honors among more than 200 entries in the Student News Competition at the annual Broadcast Education Association conference. The competition was judged by a panel of broadcast faculty members and professionals to evaluate and provide feedback for each student entry. Phoenix14News also received a third place award in the promotions/commercial category for its fall promotional campaign, “Live. Investigative. In Depth.”
The BEA Festival award is the second award won by Phoenix14News this year, and only the second award ever won by a newscast at Elon. Phoenix14News is a weekly live broadcast, produced by students, focusing on news important to college viewers. The newscast is re-broadcast several times throughout the week.
The top story on the award-winning newscast was the show’s I-TEAM investigation into the safety of off-campus housing.
Phoenix14News is staffed by 30 Elon students who research, shoot, write, and edit stories, work in the control room and studio and serve as news anchors and reporters. The team is led by News Director David Douglas, Executive Producer Jennifer Sposato and Supervising Producer Scott Myrick. Linda Lashendock, coordinator of television services, serves as staff advisor.
