Baseball second baseman Gary Morris, right, a junior from Franklin, N.C., was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America's Academic All-District first team on Thursday. Details...
Morris, who becomes eligible for national academic All-America consideration, has maintained a 3.68 GPA in environmental studies while being a leader for the Phoenix on the diamond. In his time at Elon, Morris has made the Dean’s List five times and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll five times as well as the Big South Presidential Honor Roll twice. He was also named to the Southern Conference All-Academic Team this spring.
On the field, Morris leads the team with a .371 batting average and is currently riding a team-high 12-game hitting streak. He leads the SoCon with 20 stolen bases and ranks atop the team in hits (75) and runs scored (52).
Morris, the team MVP in 2004, ranks among Elon’s all-time best in runs scored, sitting in fifth with 135 runs in his three years. He also holds down the number nine spot on the career at bats list with 559. One hit shy of breaking into the career top-10 in that category, Morris needs only nine more hits this season to set a new single-season standard.
