Changes in residence hall telephone service

Advancements in cell phone and long distance technologies have become more economical to use than the university long distance services in residence halls. Therefore, effective June 1, 2004, the university will no longer provide long distance service to the residence halls.

Local phone service will still be provided at no cost to students, faculty and staff. We recognize the need to keep in touch and recommend that students bring a phone to use in their room to take advantage of the free local service, receive long distance phone calls, and take advantage of alternative long distance services.

New and returning students should plan to use an alternative long distance service. Some suggested services are:

  • Cell phones (A cell phone provider will be on campus for several days beginning August 27, 2004.)
  • Prepaid phone cards (available for purchase in the book store and at various merchants).
  • Calling card (offered by various long distance providers)
  • Call home on 1-800 service ( e.g. http://www.hotlinehome.com , http://www.enjoyprepaid.com , http://www.discountlongdistancerates.com )
