A pedestrian safety construction project on the Elon University campus will be completed this summer, providing four crosswalks an Haggard Avenue and slowing traffic on the busy thoroughfare.
During the construction period, which will begin June 1, Haggard Avenue will be detoured from the road between Williamson and O’Kelly Avenues. Traffic will be diverted north to University Drive, the NC 100 Bypass. Signs will guide drivers to the detour route. The work will be completed and the road will reopen for normal traffic on July 15.
The project will create crosswalks and a resurfaced roadway using brick and granite stone. Two of the crosswalks will be raised four inches to provide traffic calming, which means the existing 25 mph speed limit will be the most comfortable speed through campus. The four Haggard Avenue crosswalks will be located at the following locations:
- Crosswalk between Sloan Residence Hall and the west side of Koury Center
- Crosswalk between Carlton Building and the east side of Koury Center
- Crosswalk between Powell Building and Belk Library
- Crosswalk at O’Kelly Avenue near the McMichael Science Center.
