Elon University’s biology department has received a $21,970 grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center to give students more hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques.
Linda Niedziela, assistant professor of biology, wrote the grant proposal. Grant funds will be used to purchase new equipment, including thermal cyclers, horizontal gel systems and a refrigerated water bath. The new equipment will allow more students to gain experience with molecular biology concepts during required freshman courses.
A portion of the one-year grant will also be used to send biology faculty members to national meetings and molecular techniques workshops to learn about new applications, which they will share with students.
The North Carolina Biotechnology Center was formed in 1981 by the General Assembly. It supports biotechnology research and development throughout the state, investing more than $50 million to assist faculty and research projects at North Carolina colleges and universities.
