The three-week program, which runs from June 10-30, is designed to give teachers who are earning their master’s degrees at Elon the chance to work in a classroom setting with elementary and middle school students from the Alamance-Burlington school system. The teachers fulfill the internship component required for graduation by teaching in the academy.

Each day from 8:30-11:30 a.m., teachers work with 17 students in small groups on a variety of learning projects. The goal, says Judith Howard, director of the M.Ed. program, is to give teachers a chance to make instructional decisions based on their pre-assessments and observations in the classroom.

“The teachers have an opportunity to assess each student’s strengths and needs and then make adjustments based on their observations,” Howard says. “The most unique part of the program is that our students get to design a program for the students from the ground up.”

Janet Boucher, who is directing the academy, says the schoolchildren participating in the academy enjoy the experience.

“This is a continuation of their school instruction,” says Boucher. “They see it as an opportunity and privilege to be here, and they enjoy the chance to learn.”

This is the second cohort of students to complete their M.Ed. degrees during Elon’s summer graduate program. They will receive their degrees on Aug. 21. Teachers participating in the academy are:
