Workers have been busy laying pipes and coils for the air conditioning systems being added to Smith, Carolina, Hook, Brannock and Barney halls. Last summer, air conditioning was added to West, Virginia and Sloan halls.

Work is well under way on the new recreation complex located at South Campus, near the corner of Trollinger St. and Oak Ave. This new home for club sports will include playing fields for men’s and women’s rugby, soccer and lacrosse; a field for the new club baseball team; and a practice field for the Fire of the Carolinas Marching Band. Workers recently erected light towers for the fields, which will be available for use in spring 2005.

Political science faculty members have already moved into the new Ella Darden and Elmon Lee Gray Pavilion, the third building in the Academic Village complex on the east side of campus. The new pavilion will provide expanded office space for political science faculty and a new polling center for the Elon University Poll. More than 350 students from a variety of academic disciplines work with the poll each year.

Work will continue through July 15 on a pedestrian safety construction project on Haggard Ave. The street, which is closed between Williamson and O’Kelly Avenues during the construction period, will be reconfigured with four crosswalks and a resurfaced roadway using brick and granite stone. Two of the crosswalks will be raised four inches to provide traffic calming, which means the existing 25 mph speed limit will be the most comfortable speed through campus.A photo of campus construction
