Mark you calendars for Monday evening, August 9. La Tavola Italiana—the community Italian Club–will gather for antipasti, desserts, beverages and a viewing of the film “La Notte di San Lorenzo” (“The Night of the Shooting Stars”). Here’s a link to a brief English language review of this award-winning 1982 film, set nella Toscana in 1944.
August 10th is the traditional feast day of St. Lawrence. Born in modern day Spain, Lawrence served as a deacon in Rome during the papacy of Pope Sixtus II and was executed in Rome in the year 258 C.E. in a religious persecution during the reign of Emperor Valerian. The evenings of August 11, 12 and 13 are the height of the Perseid meteor showers, and tradition holds that these shooting stars are the fiery tears of St. Lawrence, who weeps for the cruelty of humanity.
Refreshments and fellowship begin in the Carlton kitchen at 5:30 p.m. and the film follows at 7:00 p.m. in downstairs McEwen. Ability to speak Italian NOT required.
