The 115th academic year at Elon University will start with a new student convocation at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, Under the Oaks in front of West Dormitory. Approximately 1,240 new students and their families will arrive on campus Friday, Aug. 27 for orientation sessions. The first day of classes is Tuesday, Aug. 31.
Fifty-nine percent of this year’s freshmen graduated in the top quarter of their high school classes. The average SAT score of entering Elon freshmen has increased every year since 1993. This year’s average score is 1170, 10 points higher than last year, and the average GPA is 3.6.
Students entering as Fellows, which recognize excellence in honors, science, business, leadership, journalism/communications and teaching, make up 14 percent of the freshman class and have an average SAT of 1285. Presidential Scholars make up 36 percent of the class, with an average SAT score of 1260 and an average high school GPA of 3.97.
Members of the freshman class come from 35 states and the District of Columbia. Twenty-seven percent of the class comes from North Carolina, while 14 percent is from Maryland. Eleven percent is from New England states, while nine percent each is from Virginia, New York and New Jersey. Eight percent each is from Florida and Georgia. New international students, who begin orientation Wednesday, Aug. 25, represent 18 countries.
This year’s total projected enrollment of 4,750, including graduate students, is about 150 more than last year.
Top intended majors of incoming students are business, communications, education, biology, psychology, exercise sport science, political science, journalism, history and engineering.
