Bluegrass band to perform September 10 concert

Alathea, a female bluegrass band, will hold an outdoor concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 10 on the west side of Moseley Center, located on the Elon University campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The group, whose name comes from the Greek word for truth, was formed in 1999 when its three members sang together at a leadership retreat for Young Life, a Christian ministry that reaches out to high school students and adolescents. The group is composed of three East Tennessee women who seek to engage their faith through authentic, acoustic Appalachian roots music.

Alathea describes its music as a cross between the traditional twang of the hit “O Brother Where Art Thou?” soundtrack, the contemporary “newgrass” sounds of Nickel Creek and a blend of bluegrass singer Alison Krauss and Christian artist Chris Rice. Alathea’s acoustic songs offer a variety of eclectic influences and instrumentation, thanks to its Appalachian roots and diverse musical tastes.

The concert, sponsored by the Religious and Spiritual Life Office, will be held in McKinnon Hall in Moseley Center in the event of rain.
