Jon Metzger, assistant professor of music, has received the ASCAP Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for his work in 2003. This is the third straight year Metzger has received an ASCAP award.
An awards panel reviewed Metzger’s work and achievements in several categories, including compositions, recordings, performances, prizes, commissions and honors.
Metzger’s accomplishments during the previous year included a new three-movement composition for jazz quintet and percussion ensemble, “Zoroastrian Thunder,” which will be performed in February at the University of Maryland with tenor saxophonist Chris Vadala.
Metzger has performed his compositions at various festivals and college campuses throughout the year, including Appalachian State University; The North Carolina School of the Arts; The University of South Florida; The University of Central Arkansas; and the East Coast Jazz Festival.
The panel also cited Metzger’s new recording, “Common Ground,” with tenor saxophonist Jack Wilkins, pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Carroll Dashiel and drummer Allison Miller.
In addition to his compositions and performances, Metzger served as a judge for the Percussive Arts Society’s International Vibraphone Composition contest.
