The Salvation Army Frank S. Holt, Jr. Boys and Girls club of Alamance County held its 15th annual Steak and Burger Dinner on Sept. 28 at the Ramada Inn in Burlington. About 300 guests heard guest speaker Eric Montross, a former NBA and University of North Carolina basketball player, discuss the importance of education and determination.
Special awards were distributed to club participants and youth leaders. Sherri Henderson, executive director, presented the Kernodle Center for Service Learning with the inaugural Volunteer Service Award and noted the many ways Elon University students have worked with her agency through Elon Volunteers!, Academic Service-Learning and many volunteer group events.
Henderson expressed appreciation for Elon University students and said, “We couldn’t do anything without the students and staff. We consider ourselves very lucky to have such a wonderful resource in Elon University at our fingertips.” In addition, she thanked the student members of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, an Elon service organization, who served the banquet guests. More than 90 percent of The Boys and Girls club volunteer pool is composed of Elon University students.
On other occasions, The Kernodle Center for Service Learning has received two Golden Heart Awards from the Piedmont Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross. Elon’s collection of 404 productive units of blood in 2002-2003 and 403 productive units of blood in 2003-2004 earned this recognition. Coordinated by Elon Volunteers!, these events were the highest producers in Alamance County.
On Sept. 25, Allied Churches of Alamance County acknowledged and awarded the Kernodle Center for Service Learning, a Certificate of Appreciation to Elon University at their annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and General Assembly Gathering, held at Twin Lakes.
