On September 24, the Service Learning Community spent the afternoon at the Boys and Girls Club in Burlington playing educational games with the children. This event, which has been dubbed Learning is Fun Day, is meant to encourage learning and show the kids that learning can be fun. The SLC played games such as math bingo, memory, educational board games, twister, basketball, and made various crafts.
Since many of these children do not have the supplies necessary to get the most out their education, the SLC bought more than $200 worth of school supplies for the Boys and Girls Club to distribute. These supplies included notebooks, highlighters, binders, pens and pencils, crayons, construction paper, scissors, calculators, glue and many other items. Money for these school supplies was raised by holding carwashes at the Marathon gas station and Mid-Carolina Bank in Burlington.
The Service Learning Community is one of Elon’s many living-learning communities. Approximately 30 freshman live together on the third floor of Chandler with eight sophomore mentors and plan various monthly service activities for the entire floor.
