Blum to discuss U.S. policy during October 4 lecture

William Blum, former editor and founder of the Washington Free Press, will present a lecture titled, “Expanding the American Empire Under the Cover of the ‘War on Terrorism'” at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4 in Whitley Auditorium on the Elon University campus. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Liberal Arts Forum.

Blum worked at the State Department until 1967, when he left because of his opposition to the war in Vietnam. He created the Washington Free Press, the first alternative newspaper in the nation’s capital. Serving as a freelance journalist in Chile from 1972-1973, he wrote about the Allende government’s socialist experiment and its overthrow in a coup designed by the CIA.

Blum’s books include “Killing Hope: U.S. Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II” and “Rogue State: A Guide to the World’s Only Super Power.”
