Elon will host the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in a men’s soccer game at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Rhodes Stadium to benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Admission is $6, with free admission for children under age five and for youth team members who wear their team uniforms. A portion of all ticket proceeds, as well as money raised by a silent auction, will go directly to the foundation. The game marks the first time a college soccer match has been held to benefit The V Foundation.
The silent auction will include items such as autographed jerseys and balls from Elon University, The University of North Carolina, and local soccer teams. The V Foundation has also supplied a pair of tickets to its annual women’s basketball tournament at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Also available will be an autographed Terrell Owens football jersey and a football autographed by Florida State University coach Bobby Bowden and his son, former Auburn University head coach Terry Bowden.
ESPN and the late Jim Valvano created The V Foundation in 1993, in the final months of Valvano’s struggle with cancer. Valvano, a former North Carolina State University men’s basketball coach and ESPN broadcaster, won the hearts of sports fans across the country when his underdog team captured the NCAA championship in an upset win in 1983.
Since 1993, The V Foundation has raised approximately $40 million and awarded more than 200 research grants to fight cancer.
