Volleyball team earns academic award

The Elon Phoenix volleyball team has been honored with the 2003-2004 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. The team, led by head coach Mary Tendler, is one of 46 NCAA Division I teams to receive the award.

A record 305 volleyball teams nationally received the award, representing all levels of high school and intercollegiate competition.

The Phoenix recorded a team GPA of 3.42 for the year, led by senior Mary Kate Spear, who was the 2003-2004 recipient of Elon’s A.L. Hook Scholar Athlete Award as the female athlete with the highest GPA. Eleven Elon players were members of the 2003-2004 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

The AVCA award has been presented since 1992 and honors college and high school teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Elon volleyball posted a 14-19 record in 2003, its first season in of competition in the Southern Conference.
