MBA students take honorable mention in paper competition

A team from Elon University’s Martha & Spencer Love School of Business recently won honorable mention in the Carl Marks Student Paper Competition, sponsored by the Turnaround Management Association (TMA). The only international non-profit association dedicated to corporate renewal and turnaround management, TMA launched the program in 2003 to recognize outstanding student achievement in the field of corporate renewal.

The Elon team of Doug Cornett, David Kramer, and Scott Mackey submitted a paper titled , “RRR Home Improvement: Providing Shelter for Strong Growth.” Kevin O’Mara, associate professor of business administration, and David Noer, Frank Holt Professor of Leadership, served as faculty advisors. The students will share a $600 cash prize, which is funded by Carl Marks Consulting Group LLC and Carl Marks Capital Advisors LLC in New York, affiliates of Carl Marks & Co., a leading merchant bank in New York.

The winning papers were selected on the basis of their relevance to issues relating to corporate distress, financial restructuring and reorganization, and quality of writing and analysis. A team from New York University Stern School of Business received first place, and a team from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Chicago, received second place.

With international headquarters in Chicago, TMA (www.turnaround.org) has 6,800 members in 34 regional chapters. Its Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) program recognizes professional excellence and provides an objective measure of expertise related to restructurings and corporate renewal.
