Atlantic Monthly correspondent Eric Schlosser will discuss thriving black market industries, including marijuana and pornography, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 16 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus.
The Liberal Arts Forum and General Studies program are sponsors of the event.
Schlosser’s lecture, titled “Reefer Madness: Sex, Drugs, and Cheap Labor in the American Black Market,” spotlights three thriving black market industries: marijuana, migrant labor, and pornography. Such underground industries, Schlosser claims, account for as much as 10 percent of the American economy. Although rarely discussed in newspapers, Schlosser tackles the subject with the same in-depth analysis that made his book, “Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All American Meal,” a bestseller.
Tickets are available for $12 or free for those with valid Elon identification. Tickets may be purchased by calling the McCrary Theatre box office at (336) 278-5610. The box office is open from 12:30-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
