Jordan’s Crown Prince Al-Hussein to deliver 2005 Commencement address

In recent years, Elon has chosen commencement speakers who have a special tie to the university. Laith Majali, a member of the class of 2005, is acquainted with Crown Prince Al-Hussein and is the first recipient of Elon’s King Hussein Scholarship. The scholarship, which provides resources for a Jordanian citizen to study at Elon, was established after a 2000 visit to Elon by Queen Noor.

Al-Hussein attended the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England, graduating as a commissioned officer in the Jordan Arab Army in 1999. He won several awards at the academy, including the Sandhurst Overseas Sword, presented to the best overseas cadet, and the HRH Prince Saud Abdullah Prize, presented to the cadet with the best grades in academic subjects.

As an officer in the Jordan Arab Army’s 40th Armored Brigade, Al-Hussein attended a number of military courses in Jordan, the United Kingdom, Poland, Germany and the United States. He has served with the Jordan-United Arab Emirates force in the former Yugoslavia as part of an international peacekeeping force. He currently holds the rank of captain in the Jordan Arab Army.

Al-Hussein has also served Jordan in a number of other capacities. He is the Higher President of Jordan’s Aal Al Bayt Foundation for Islamic Thought and the Honorary President of the Jordan Basketball Federation. He is chair of the board of trustees of the Royal Car Museum and president of the Royal Aerosports Club of Jordan.

The May 21 commencement exercises will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the historic area Under the Oaks in front of West Residence Hall.
