Fifth- and sixth-graders from area schools participated in several educational activities with the Phoenix women’s basketball team Wednesday, Jan. 26, before watching Elon take on Longwood University at noon.
Elon and the Alamance/Burlington School system teamed up to hold the first “Education Day with the Phoenix” Wednesday morning. Almost 500 students from Eastlawn Elementary, Andrews Elementary, Newlin Elementary and Broadview Middle schools took part.
Students participated in a geography exercise that had them locate the hometowns of their favorite athletes and a math problem using statistics from this year’s Elon basketball team. The students also learned about good health and nutrition.
Elon head coach Brenda Paul said her team was excited to have the chance to work with the students. “We were able to participate in an Education Day at Western Carolina last year and it was a great experience,” Paul said. “This provides a tremendous opportunity for our players to interact with these kids.”
