Doctor to discuss gene therapy during March 2 speech

R. Michael Blaese, a leader in the field of immunodeficiency and gene therapy, will deliver a Voices of Discovery lecture at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 2 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus. His speech is free and open to the public.

Blaese was part of a team that used gene therapy in 1990 to combat severe combined immune deficiency in a young girl. He will discuss the advantages that gene therapy can offer, as well as some of the moral and social dilemmas faced by scientists in this field. Blaese is president of PreGentis, Inc., and also an adjunct investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Maryland.
