School representatives from institutions in the Carolinas and Virginia gathered to share ideas on service-learning and its integration into a variety of courses. Keynote speakers included Edward Zlotkowski, professor of English at Bentley College and senior faculty fellow with Campus Compact, and James Williams, a junior at Princeton University and student engaged scholar with Campus Compact.
Conference participants could choose from a variety of programs dealing with the topic of service-learning, including sessions on technology, development programs for faculty and international service-learning.
Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of student life at Elon, welcomed the group and thanked them for their work.
“The viability of service-learning within the academy requires the active participation of not only students but administrative leaders. Partnerships are extremely important in our work,” Jackson said.
John Barnhill, director of NC Campus Compact, said conference participants use the day to learn from each other.
“This is the premier opportunity for faculty in the region to share best practices and methods of integrating service into all courses,” said Barnhill. “I’m incredibly pleased with the turnout for this year’s conference.”
