Death penalty foe, execution witness Sister Helen Prejean to speak March 14

Sister Helen Prejean, an advocate for death row inmates and their families, will speak at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 14 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus.

A Roman Catholic nun, Prejean has been speaking out against the death penalty since 1981, when she met Patrick Sonnier, a condemned inmate on Louisiana’s death row. Prejean was with Sonnier when he went to the electric chair in 1984 and has been a witness to four other executions in Louisiana.

She is the author of the New York Times bestseller “Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the U.S.,” which became an Academy Award-winning film in 1996, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. Her latest book, “The Death of Innocents,” is about the execution of inmates who may have been innocent.

Tickets for the performance are $12, or free with Elon identification. Tickets may be purchased at the McCrary Theatre box office at (336) 278-5610. The box office is open from 12:30 p.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
