Elon’s second Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professor of Leadership, Christine Todd Whitman, will give two public lectures on March 1st and 3rd. Former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Whitman served as the first female governor of New Jersey from 1993 until assuming the EPA position in President Bush’s cabinet from 2001-2003. Her book about the place of moderates in American politics, It’s My Party Too, will be released in 2005.

Having headed the EPA at a time when polls show that few Americans decide for whom to vote on the basis of candidates’ environmental records, Whitman knows the challenges and frustrations of promoting responsible environmental polices in Washington today. She will share her insights into the political realities that are frustrating reasonable environmental policymaking and discuss what she believes must be done to better protect America’s air, water, and land.
