Student Wins Major Poetry Award

In the fall, Irene Harvley-Felder did something amazing:
She was a finalist in the fiction contest sponsored by NC State. Hundreds of writers, of all ages and from all over the state, entered the contest, and Irene was judged to be among the top writers.

Now she’s done something really unbelievably incredible.  Listen to this announcement from NC State about their spring poetry contest:

“The results are in!  This was the fiercest competition yet — some 625 poems were judged this year, poems from every corner of the state.  We didn’t envy our Chief Judge Peter Makuck his task, but as editor of Tar River Poetry, he’s used to reading and deciding — fortunately for us.

2005 WINNER

Irene Harvley-Felder, “In Celebration of Death” (Burlington, NC)

Come join us on March 30th when we give out prizes to the Winner (who will read her poem) and the Honorable Mentions (we have prizes for them, too), before enjoying a reading from Peter Makuck himself.  This will be at 7:30 p.m. in Room 029 (the basement) of Winston Hall on Hillsborough Street (across from the Bruegger’s Bagels).”

A huge congratulations goes to Irene—wow!
