The Southern Conference named its Postgraduate Scholarship recipients for the 2004-05 academic year on Wednesday, March 23. Nine senior student-athletes–including Elon’s Pramote Malasitt–received the scholarships and will be recognized at the Southern Conference Honors Dinner on June 1 in Hilton Head, S.C. The Postgraduate Scholarships are part of the TIAA-CREF Academic Awards Program.
Malasitt, a men’s tennis player from Bangkok, Thailand, will receive the TIAA-CREF Graduate Scholarship, which includes an honorarium for a professor of his choice. He carries a 3.92 GPA in computer science and has aspirations of becoming a doctor. Malasitt is a member of multiple honor societies and received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete award in 2004.
So far in 2005, the Phoenix team captain has posted a 12-1 record (5-0 SoCon) at No. 1 singles and an 8-3 ledger (4-1 SoCon) at No. 1 doubles. He has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week three times and the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week once so far this season. Malasitt was crowned the Southern Conference Athlete of the Month for February.
In 2004, Malasitt received the A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to the Elon student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. He was also named to the CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District III and earned SoCon TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week honors as well last season. He was a member of the SoCon Academic Honor Roll and the Academic All-Conference team for 2003-04.
Malasitt has been a member of Elon’s Student-Athlete Leadership Council and attended the Southern Conference Leadership Institute in July 2004. On the court, Malasitt has earned first-team all-conference honors at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles each of the past three seasons. He received Elon’s Robert C. Browne Memorial Sportsmanship Award last year.
