Concert to feature guitarist Caliendo with Elon faculty member April 17

Renowned composer and guitarist Christopher Caliendo will join flutist and Elon University music faculty member Linda Cykert for a free concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 17 in Yeager Recital Hall, located in the Center for the Arts on campus.

The program includes New World music composed by Caliendo, who has written more than 500 classical world music compositions. He has appeared at numerous festivals in residence, where his unique blending of musical styles within the classical umbrella has attracted a large following.

Caliendo is the only American composer in history to be commissioned twice by the Vatican for his sacred music oratorio, “The Mystic Saints.” He has written scores for CBS, receiving an Emmy nomination with composer Jerrold Immel for his work. Caliendo has received the Henry Mancini Award for film composition, the Artin Arslanian Scholarship for Humanities and the Peabody Grant for Scholarship.

Cykert is a member of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Roanoke Symphony, the Winston-Salem Symphony and the North Carolina Symphony. She was a winner in the 1989 National Flute Association’s Solo Masterclass competition, won positions in the 1993-1996 NFA Professional Flute Choirs and was a judge for the NFA’s 1997-2000 and 2002 newly published music contests. Cykert received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she was the 1987 Presser Scholar and earned induction into Pi Kappa Lambda, the honorary music society. She has also attended the Saratoga School of Orchestral Studies.
