Trustees of Elon University elected new officers and members at their spring meeting, held April 15-16 on campus.
Dr. James B. Powell, Burlington, N.C. was elected chair of the board; Dr. William N. P. Herbert, a 1968 Elon alumnus from Charlottesville, Va., is vice chair; and Barbara Bass, a 1961 Elon alumnus from South Boston, Va., is secretary.
The Rev. G. Melvin Palmer, Greensboro, N.C., who has been a trustee since 1973, was elected trustee emeritus.
Newly elected to the board is Bob E. McKinnon, a 1962 Elon alumnus from Charlotte, N.C. McKinnon was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1995 to 2001 and has served Elon in a variety of other capacities. He was Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 1993, was president of the Alumni Association and a member of Elon’s Board of Visitors. He has been a generous supporter of the university, served as national chair of the Campaign for the Elon Vision and made major gifts to name McKinnon Hall in Moseley Center and McKinnon Field in Rhodes Stadium. He is currently chair and CEO of McKinnon-Land-Moran, LLC. His term will begin with the fall 2005 board meeting.
Named to a two-year term as Youth Trustee is Darris R. Means, a spring 2005 graduate in sociology from Spartanburg, S.C. Means is a Social Science Scholar and member of Elon’s Service Learning Community. He is a member of both Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Sigma honor societies, was active in the Student Government Association and was junior class president and senior class vice president. He plans to pursue a doctorate in sociology next fall.
