On Saturday, April 16, nearly 200 Elon students participated in the 2nd annual Elon Service Day, completing a record 748 service hours. Elon students joined thousands of young people across the nation participating in National Youth Service Day.
Projects were selected to enable students to contribute to community beautification and facilities that serve diverse populations in Alamance County. At a community ministry in Burlington, students painted, mulched, and renovated facilities. Leftover food from Service Day was donated to the ministry’s food pantry. Students raked leaves and painted a fence at various locations. The Elon Gospel Choir performed at a senior center.
By helping with these tasks, students gave the staff at these agencies the ability to focus their resources more on their mission and programs.
“In cleaning and landscaping at these locations, we not only help the staff, but enhance the experience for those in our community that utilize these agencies,” said Adam Smith, Elon Service Day student coordinator. “This was also a great way for members of student organizations to work together for a common goal, and further develop an ethic of service.”
Elon Service Day was sponsored by Elon Volunteers! and the Student Government Association. Jennifer Pautz and Adam Smith were the student coordinators and Tim Geier, AmeriCorps Vista with Elon Volunteers!, provided staff support.
