Read this note for more information about a forum for Elon men on sexual violence, scheduled for 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 20 in McKinnon Hall...
As promised in a recent letter to the Elon community from Dr. Lambert, a Men’s Forum on the topic of sexual violence is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, 9-10:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall. All men on campus – students, faculty and staff – are invited to attend.
Recent events at Elon make this an urgent conversation. How can we create a campus and community environment where violence against women will not be practiced? Violence against any person is not acceptable, but men have a special responsibility to assure that violence has no place in our relationships with women.
One of the enduring problems that men must address – that men have the particular burden to address – is our culture’s permissiveness about what men can get away with. However, “boys will be boys” is not an acceptable definition of what it means to be a man.
On Wednesday night, we will discuss what messages we have heard from our fathers and our culture about how men ought to relate to women, and we will look at which of them are healthy and which are not.
I invite men from all areas of university life to attend – athletics, fraternities, campus recreation, religious life, residence halls, etc. Spread the word.
