Gerald Dillashaw, Dean of the School of Education, and Mark Rumley, Director for School Outreach Programs, delivered an invited presentation regarding programs of support for first-year and new teachers to members of NCACTE (North Carolina Association of Colleges for Teacher Education) at UNC-Wilmington on Friday, April 22.
The highlighted program SUCCESSFUL BEGINNINGS: A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT ACADEMY was developed at Elon through the Office of School Outreach Programs and offers various efforts of support and multiple levels of scaffolding for new and first-year teachers in the Alamance-Burlington Schools. The program seeks in part to deliver high-quality professional development monthly and to create an environment of collegiality for beginning teachers. Included among other program goals is an emphasis on the retention of beginning teachers. Two similar programs of support are also delivered to Year 2 and Year 3 teachers in the local schools.
More information regarding the SUCCESSFUL BEGINNINGS programs can be obtained through the School of Education.
