The banks of Lake Mary Nell provided the perfect setting April 22 for Earthfest, an event sponsored by several campus groups to raise awareness about Earth Day and environmental issues. Details...
Canoeing, a recycling station, live bands and free food were just some of the attractions duirng Earthfest, sponsored by the Sierra Club with support from College Democrats, Elon Outdoors and the Elon Environmental Council.
“The main idea is to get people outside and make them more aware of the environment and what we can do to protect it,” says sophomore Jennifer Golan, vice president of Elon’s Sierra Club chapter.
A recycling table displayed the variety of household containers that can be recycled while nearby, students personalized recyclable mugs. Other tables provided information about key issues, such as destruction of coral reefs and rainforest preservation. Hot dogs and hamburgers sizzled on the grill adjacent to the stage where student group Twisted Measure, soloist Ben Pritchard and the local band Anonymous performed.
Senior Rachel Dellavalle said the event promotes environmental awareness and responsibility across campus. “We’re trying to make this a bigger event each year.”
April 22 is the 35th celebration of Earth Day, a worldwide event to promote protection of the Earth and its environment.
