Senior Brett Tolley’s experience with the BorderLinks program and his documentary about immigrants trying to enter the United States was featured in a April 24 Burlington Times-News article.
Tolley, an international studies major, spent a semester in the BorderLinks program, which gives Americans the chance to learn more about life on the U.S.-Mexican border. Tolley began talking to immigrants and learned that almost 2,000 people have died trying to cross the border into the U.S. since 1998.
He began videotaping his conversations with immigrants and produced a 40-minute film titled “Dying to get in: Undocumented Immigration on the U.S./Mexico Border.” The film follows two Mexican men as they attempt to cross the border.
The article, by staff writer and Elon alum Keren Rivas, was one of three stories the paper ran April 24 about illegals immigrants, their impact on Alamance County and the rights they have in the U.S.
