Middle grades majors in Dr. Glenda Crawford’s Effective Middle Level Teaching class have been involved in service learning projects with middle school students at Turrentine Middle School in Burlington. In a study of World War II, young adolescents from a sixth grade team interviewed volunteer war veterans at The Village at Brookwood and subsequently published a newspaper that featured their bios.
On Wednesday, April 27, the veterans, students, Elon interns and mentor teachers gathered for a ceremony during which a tree was planted on the Turrentine grounds to commemorate the vererans’ service.
A second team of Elon interns whose eighth graders were studying the Great Depression hosted a canned food drive, followed by a bus trip to Loaves and Fishes food bank to stock the shelves and bag food and produce for community people in need.
