Elon senior Carla Seay was selected to attend a minority career workshop sponsored by the International Radio & Television Society Foundation April 14-15 at the Marriott Marquis in New York. Only a few dozen students from across the nation were invited to participate.
Seay enjoyed a day of presentations by young professionals from Hill & Knowlton, Winky I Productions, VH1, NBC Universal, Interep, WKTU-FM, CBS, Nielsen Media Research, E! and Style networks, KTRK-TV, “Dateline NBC,” MTV Networks, Grey Worldwide, New York 1 News, Fox News Network, Food Network, Nuforms Media, CBS Sports, YES Network Magazine, Emerald Bay Entertainment, Time Warner Cable, WPIX-TV and Infinity.
“The IRTS Minority Career Workshop was an incredible experience,” Seay said. “I was able to meet many professionals in the industry and I now have a list of contacts for future endeavors.”
The students shared a meal with Anderson Cooper and Jonathan Klein of CNN, Joshua Sapan of Rainbow Media Holdings, Herb Scannell of Nickelodeon Networks, and David Zaslav of NBC Universal.
She and the other students in the select group of attendees spent the second day in New York networking with professionals from these organizations and more. Seay developed at least two potential future job offers from the
sessions.
“The experience did not end when the workshop did,” Seay said. “I will also be participating in the IRTS Summer Fellowship Program, a nine-week,
all-expenses-paid program where I will gain experience at a New York-based corporation. I encourage all communications majors to apply to these programs. It really helps you get your foot in the door in this industry.”
