More than 50 high school student-athletes from the Piedmont Triad region are learning leadership skills and other valuable lessons during the Student-Athlete Summer Institute, being held June 12-16 at Elon. Details...
Sponsored by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, the institute gives area high school athletes the opportunity to learn teamwork and leadership skills through a series of speakers, seminars and activities.
Elon is hosting the institute for the Piedmont region, one of five regions designated by the NCHSAA for the event. Students at the Piedmont region institute represent 13 high schools in Durham, Yadkin, Stanly, Orange, Alamance and Randolph counties. Each school can send a maximum of four student-athletes and a faculty/staff advisor.
Students got a chance to test their skills on the challenge course at the Elon Lodge on Tuesday, June 14. Elon students and staff will lead a series of presentations on preparing for college, healthy lifestyle choices, goal-setting and community service. Participants will visit the Boys and Girls Club in Burlington on Wednesday to work with local children.
Students and their advisors will return to their high schools with a plan to teach peers about an issue important to teenagers, such as tobacco and alcohol abuse, community service or sportsmanship.
