More than 225 members of the Elon community helped operate a concessions tent at the 105th U.S. Open golf championship, held June 13-19 at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C.
Hal Walker, associate professor of leisure and sport management, organized the Elon volunteers and worked closely with USGA officials to coordinate the effort. Walker says more than 55 percent of the 8-hour work shifts during the week were covered by Elon students, and more than 30 faculty and staff members volunteered.
Elon’s leisure and sport management program will receive a portion of the stand’s proceeds during the week, which will benefit a merit and need-based endowed scholarship being established by the department.
