John Peter Rascoe, Jr., 53, the first African American to serve on the Board of Trustees, died Monday, July 18 in Greensboro, N.C., after a two-year battle with brain cancer.
Rascoe was elected young alumni trustee in 1975 after graduating cum laude from Elon in 1974. He was also a member of the Elon football team. He worked for the City of Greensboro, retiring in February 2004 as a collections manager.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Rascoe; daughters, Kelly and Carla Rascoe, all of Greensboro. He is also survived by his parents, John and Donna Rascoe, and five younger siblings.
Visitation was held Thursday, July 21 and the funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 23 at Indian Woods Baptist Church in Windsor, N.C. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
