Seven Elon students will participate in the second-annual Fit to Lead conference on campus Aug. 4-7. The conference focuses on four areas of leadership development: self, team, action and citizenship. Dan LaPasha, a consultant with Learning Technologies, Inc., will provide feedback and coaching to the students on their personal leadership styles.
Students will learn about the essential elements of team performance, such as communication, trust and collaboration, during a session on the Elon Challenge Course. Keys to effective leadership will be explored in detail, including vision, goal setting, empowering others through delegation, inclusiveness and integrity.
A special event during Fit to Lead is the Deans Discussion, which gives students the opportunity to glean insights from established campus leaders. Gerry Francis, provost; Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of student life; Susan Klopman, dean of admissions and financial planning; and Nan Perkins, vice president for institutional advancement, will field questions and socialize with the group for two hours on Friday afternoon. Fit to Lead will conclude with a focus on citizenship, as students make a commitment to serve the common good through the vision and skills they develop at the conference.
Students participating in Fit to Lead include Bonnie Brackett; Tracy Corpening; Bess Davis; Jessica Dries; LeBron Saulter; Sarah Schupp and Meggan Thompson.
Fit to Lead is sponsored by the Center for Leadership. Angela Passarelli, director of the center, is the lead facilitator and Jena Broach is the intern coordinator. Other program presenters include Mallory Anderson, Carolyn Whittier, Kat Cochrane-Yamaguchi, and Jenny Trimble.
