Construction has begun on the Elon University School of Law facility in downtown Greensboro. The demolition of the interior of the former Greensboro Central Public Library building was completed this spring and architectural design work was completed this summer leading up to the construction bid process.
Lomax Construction of Greensboro, N.C., has been named general contractor for the renovation. The project is scheduled for completion in May 2006, and the law school will enroll its first class in fall 2006.
Located at the corner of West Friendly Avenue and North Greene Street, the renovated facility will provide the law school with four floors of space. The law library and mezzanine will occupy the two floors below street level, housing the latest wireless computing technology and a rich collection of electronic and print legal resources, including LEXIS/NEXIS, Westlaw and thousands of online databases and journals. The library will feature spacious reading and study areas, multimedia facilities, a computer lab and office spaces.
The first floor will include a courtroom, jury room, dean’s suite, staff and faculty offices, and a multipurpose seminar/classroom. A two-story skylight will bring exterior light into the entrance lobby. Renovation to the building’s second floor will include the addition of exterior windows facing Greene Street and Friendly Avenue. The second floor will feature three major classrooms, seminar rooms, faculty offices and a student commons and coffee bar.
Lomax Construction was founded in 1996. The company has received numerous awards for its work, including The Pinnacle Award for the best construction project in the Carolinas in 1998 for its work on the Greensboro Children’s Museum, and the 2001 North Carolina Small Business of the Year Award.
