Elon plans service trip to Gulfport, Mississippi

Students, faculty and staff are invited to get involved in planning a Fall Break trip to provide Hurricane Katrina relief assistance in Gulfport, Miss. Read this note for details...

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

To ensure a long-lasting and effective response to Hurricane Katrina, Elon University has initiated a relationship with several neighborhoods in Gulfport, Mississippi. Students will take several break trips to the area to complete direct service projects, the first of which will be over Fall Break (10/14–10/18).

Fall Break interest sessions are scheduled for Wednesday. Sept. 21, and Thursday, September 22 from 7:30- 8:30 in Mooney 302.

Applications are available in the Kernodle Center, Moseley 230. The applications are due Friday September 23rd.

In combination with the trips, needed supplies will be collected for students to transport and distribute to the people of Gulfport. We are asking individuals, student organizations, residence halls and apartments, academic departments, and any others who may be interested in this project to contact the Kernodle Center for Service Learning at x7250 and sign up for a specific group of supplies. Informing the Kernodle Center of your team’s efforts is important to ensure that Elon will be able to provide a balanced supply of necessary items to the people of Gulfport.

Please choose one of the following groups:

Group A: Baby stuff—formula, diapers, baby cereal, baby powder, wet wipes

Group B: T-shirts, shorts, socks, underwear (all of these items need to be new and unused)

Group C: First-aid supplies, quinine tablets, aspirin/Tylenol

Group D: Hygiene products—toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, razors, feminine products, etc.)

Group E: Unscented bleach, liquid laundry detergent, anti-bacterial hand soap, bug repellent, bleach

Group F: Non-perishable food

You can bring your items to the storage trailer in McMichael parking lot from Monday, Oct. 3 through Wednesday, Oct. 12, between 11 a .m. and 1 p.m. Please plan on storing collected items yourself until that time.

The community we are assisting is one of the hardest hit in Gulfport. Gulfport supports a diverse population and has demographics similar to those of Burlington. We will be coordinating our relief efforts through Crosspoint Baptist Church and other local organizations. In some parts of Gulfport, there are no buildings still standing—just piles of rubble and debris.

Again, if you would like to help, please contact the Kernodle Center at x7250.

Thanks.
