The terrace at Elon University’s Dalton McMichael Science building was dedicated in honor of C. Almon “Mon” McIver, a member of the class of 1936, during a ceremony Thursday, Oct. 13. McIver Terrace was named through a gift from Elon trustee A. Christine Baker, a 1988 graduate of the MBA program, to honor her friend and mentor.
“We are all so delighted that Mon McIver’s name is going to grace this terrace,” Elon President Leo M. Lambert said. “Mon has been part of the Elon community for more than 70 years. He is often called ‘Mr. Elon’ and is one of its most faithful volunteers.”
Baker, executive vice president and CFO of First State Bank, said McIver introduced her to Elon when she moved to the area in 1985. “He encouraged me to get my MBA at Elon and he invited me to worship with him at First Presbyterian Church. I love him dearly and I’m honored he could share this day with me.”
McIver was a Burlington business and community leader for more than 40 years, serving as mayor of Burlington from 1959 to 1963. He joined Baker-Cammack Hosiery Mills in 1934 as payroll clerk, working his way up through the company before being named president in 1973.
McIver was active in a variety of community organizations. He served as president of the United Way in 1975 and 1976, and also served as treasurer for three years. McIver was president of the Burlington Rotary Club in 1970 and was named Citizen of the Year by the Kiwanis Club in 1975.
McIver received Elon’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1984 and served the university as president of the Alumni Association and the Golden Alumni Association. He also served on the Elon College Development Council and the Board of Visitors. He received the Elon Medallion in 1993 in recognition of his long and meritorious service to the university.
McIver’s longtime friend and business associate, Dalton McMichael, established the C. Almon McIver Leadership Scholarship at Elon in 1988.
