Major League baseball umpire Joe West ’74 is serving as chief of the six-man umpiring crew for the 2005 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros, which began Saturday, Oct. 22 in Chicago.
The selection solidifies West’s place as one of baseball’s top umpires. He was the home plate umpire for the All Star Game in Detroit in July and also worked the American League division series this fall between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels.
West, who worked the World Series in 1993 and 1997, called balls and strikes for Game 1, and would also work home plate for a decisive Game 7, if necessary.
West was a three-year starter at quarterback for Elon and is a member of the Elon Sports Hall of Fame.
