Fiery flamenco star José Porcel and his ballet company will perform at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus.
Ballet Flamenco José Porcel is celebrated throughout the world as one of Spain’s greatest exports of the new flamenco, a style of dance developed in southern Spain in the 15th century. Flamenco dance and music is a combination of two diverse cultures, the Gypsies and the Andalucians.
Born in Seville, Spain, Porcel began dancing at age 13. He studied under maestro Martin Vargas before moving to Madrid to continue his dance studies with Paco Romero, Isabel Quintero and Cristóbal Reyes. Porcel made his professional debut in 1989 in the “Ballet de Valencia,” directed by Vargas, and made his first American tour in 1993 with the Clara Romana Company’s performance of “Carmina Burriana.”
Tickets for the performance are $15 or free for those with valid Elon identification. Tickets can be purchased by calling the McCrary Theatre box office at (336) 278-5610. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12:30 p.m.-5 p.m.
