The Black Cultural Society held a commemorative ceremony in front of Alamance building Thursday, Dec. 1 to mark the 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., bus.
Parks, who died Oct. 24 at age 92, was remembered for her courage to confront discrimination. “She was a catalyst for a movement that would change our country forever,” said Tia Sorrell, BCS vice president. “Imagine if she had not given up her seat that day, how different our country might have been.”
Nuri Abdur-Rauf, BCS president, read two poems about Parks written by Rita Dove, and led the group in the singing of “Lift Every Voice.”
