Representatives from community agencies and the Kernodle Center for Service Learning gathered Friday, Dec. 2 for training in the Leaders in Collaborative Service (LINCS) program.
The program will manage volunteer coordination, training, scheduling and communication with the Kernodle Center. Elon students in the program will be based in community service agencies, coordinating the efforts of their fellow students to enhance the quality, quantity and depth of the student volunteer experience.
LINCS students will seek to understand the assets and needs of their particular organization at many levels. They will attend board and staff meetings to help plan strategic ways of linking the agency to student resources at Elon.
Claire King, director of the Center for Community Partnerships for Service-Learning at Indiana University, Bloomington, facilitated the Elon training program. The Indiana program is similar to the one Elon plans to implement.
Participating agencies are the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, the Burlington Housing Authority and Family Abuse Services.
To be chosen for the LINCS program, Elon students must have previous experience in an academic service-learning course, co-curricular service experience and some leadership experience. They must be able to serve a minimum of 10 hours per week and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Contact the Kernodle Center at 278-7250 for more information on the program.
The LINCS program is funded by a grant from the Charles Frueauff Foundation of Little Rock, Ark.
