Click here to view a photo gallery of the annual Lighting of the Luminarias celebration held on campus Dec. 1. About 1,800 luminarias lined sidewalks between Alamance building and Moseley Center. Details...
The event was sponsored by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life. Setup of the luminarias began about 11 a.m., with volunteers working throughout the day to set out the candles and then begin the big job of lighting them. Among the volunteers were members of the women’s basketball team. Students, faculty, staff and friends gathered after dark around Fonville Fountain. Chaplian Richard McBride led a volunteer choir in carols. Jewish students lighted a Menorah to mark Hanukkuh. McBride also read from the book, “The Polar Express,” and a small train gave children rides around campus. Students lingered on Scott Plaza after the celebration to enjoy hot chocolate and have their photos taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
