The survey, the most comprehensive assessment of effective practices in higher education, includes data from 135,000 students at 618 schools.

In the 2002 NSSE report, Elon students give high marks to their experiences on each of five benchmarks of excellence:

  • Level of academic challenge
  • Active and collaborative learning
  • Student-faculty interaction
  • Enriching educational experiences
  • Supportive campus environment

Student responses to a series of questions related to their academic experiences and daily interactions with faculty and other students, ranked Elon in the top ten percent of all master’s-level universities participating in the survey. Elon’s scores were particularly high in the area of student-faculty interactions and enriching educational experiences such as study abroad, volunteer service and internships.

The 2002 NSSE report, which is sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The Pew Forum on Undergraduate Learning, was released Nov. 12. The study provides information to students and parents in the college search process and gives campuses insight into effective teaching and student learning. Full details of the report can be found on the NSSE Web site at: www.iub.edu/~nsse.

The NSSE survey asked randomly selected freshmen and seniors a set of 41 key questions about their educational experiences. Below are Elon student responses to selected 2002 survey questions, compared with the figures from other schools in the survey.
